Refreshing the Holidays: New traditions for you and your family
The winter holidays mean time spent with loved ones engaging in family traditions and being thankful for your lives together. While doing the same old thing every holiday season can be nostalgic and comforting, why not incorporate fun, new traditions into your yearly routine? We’ve come up with a few enticing options, and we’re certain you’ll find something you like whether you’re traveling or staying close to home.
Record a year-in-review
You might be used to typing out a long email to your friends and family each year with bullet point highlights, but a multimedia experience is so much more engaging. Cobble together photos and videos from the previous 365 days into an interactive show for your loved ones — vacations, milestones, and silly memories will make the recipients feel like they were part of the fun.
Go for a hike
At The Canyons, we pride ourselves on taking joy in the gorgeous world around us. A beautiful hike near Castle Pines could become a yearly reminder of your connection to the outdoors. An important note: Always be sure to pack warm clothes and have the proper winter hiking equipment. Your family will relish the time together in the natural world, and then when you get home, eating holiday cookies will feel especially earned!
Eight nights of Hanukkah in one
If you celebrate the Jewish Festival of Lights, you’re probably used to spreading the holiday out over the course of eight nights. However, if your busy schedule doesn’t allow for a full celebration every evening during the holiday, try fitting the best of the festivities with family and friends into one special night. Light the menorah, spin the dreidel, eat potato latkes — with applesauce and sour cream, of course — and exchange gifts in the flickering candlelight to build cozy and cherished memories.
Even if you’ll be enjoying the holidays from the comfort of your home, that doesn’t mean you can’t get inspired by fun foreign traditions. Did you know that in Japan, people traditionally eat Kentucky Fried Chicken on Christmas? Or that Ukrainian Christmas decorations typically consist of tinsel and crystal spiderwebs? In Australia, since December is right in the middle of their summer vacation, many celebrate the holidays on the beach. Bring some international flair back home and have a fun fusion celebration of your own.
No matter how you choose to celebrate — be it with old traditions or new — we hope that The Canyons will be part of your future festivities.
