water and energy conservation

Our goal is to make The Canyons a national model for sustainable water and energy use. And our strategy is simple: a small reduction in water and/or energy use by each resident has a much larger positive impact at the source. For instance, there is typically a 50% loss of energy during transmission from the power plant to the home. So incremental savings in the home yield much larger savings at the source. We’re aiming for a 40% overall reduction in energy use in the home by working with our builders to implement the latest in energy-saving technologies, such as high-efficiency furnaces, programmable thermostats, low-e windows, and advanced Energy Star® appliances. At the community level we will also be integrating renewable energy sources like solar and wind to further reduce our impact on the grid.

Our goal is to work toward a 40% overall reduction in water use in the home by choosing low water landscaping, native planting, limited active irrigated area, low flow fixtures and other technologies.
